Biography
Deanesh Ramsewak is an Assistant Professor in Practice at the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s Centre for Maritime and Ocean Studies (CMOS). His expertise lies in the application of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for wetland and coastal ecosystem mapping.
He has contributed to numerous Caribbean initiatives supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). Mr. Ramsewak’s career in coastal and ocean monitoring started at the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) in Trinidad and Tobago, where he managed two real-time satellite receiving stations that provided critical monitoring services for the Caribbean region. After nearly a decade at the IMA, he transitioned to academia, joining the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in 2014.
At UTT, Mr. Ramsewak currently teaches courses on GIS and space-based technologies. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications on the mapping and monitoring of coastal wetlands, flooding, and land cover change using space-based and aerial imagery. He is also the founder of the UTT student space club.
Mr. Ramsewak is an active member of multiple regional and national working groups and committees focused on marine monitoring and conservation. He is also a mentor for the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) - an international organization based in Vienna, Austria, that promotes space advocacy among young professionals. Additionally, he is a Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMAREST) in the United Kingdom.
In 2024, Mr. Ramsewak was appointed to the Steering Committee of the United Nations Ocean Decade Digital Twins of the Ocean (DITTO) Programme.
