Biography
Dr. Sherine Ahmed El Baradei, is an associate professor of hydraulics and irrigation engineering -water engineering- and hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Hydraulics and Irrigation from Cairo University (2005), a Master’s in Environmental Engineering from The American University in Cairo (AUC), and a Bachelor’s in Construction Engineering from AUC with high honors (1997). She also holds a certificate in Astronomy from the University of Arizona (2024) and is currently pursuing her MSc in Space Systems at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US.
She worked as a full time assistant professor in the construction engineering depart at the American University in Cairo for 10 straight years.
She worked as Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at the German University in Cairo (GUC), where she founded the “Sustainable Environmental Engineering” Postgraduate Diploma. In 2024, her interdisciplinary expertise led her to establish the Space-Water-Environment Nexus e-Center, a groundbreaking initiative launched in cooperation with the Pan African Citizen Science e-Lab, integrating space-based technologies with water and environmental management in Africa.
She is a frequent presenter and organizer at the Cairo Climate Talks, a prestigious platform organized under the auspices of the German Embassy in Egypt and DAAD, where she shares insights on the intersection of environmental engineering and climate resilience. Her research on the effects of global warming on water quality in rivers earned her the Best Session Paper Award at an international conference in Dubai (2014). At the international level, she is featured as a Space4Water Professoinal community member, contributing expertise on global water combined with space technology challenges.
She was appointed as Egypt’s national representative to the Mediterranean Science Team 2025, under the umbrella of the European Union Commission, and was awarded a prize in Brussels, Belgium in March 2025.
As dynamic educator, she has developed and taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in water engineering, environmental systems, numerical modeling, and bio-fluid mechanics at American University in Cairo, Nile University, and the German University in Cairo.
She is also an evaluator for DAAD scholarships, and a review editor for two international journals in civil and environmental engineering
She is a recognized speaker and panelist at major international events such as the 79th UN General Assembly Science Summit, the New Space Horizon Conference, and Cairo Water Week. She chaired the American ISEC 11 International Conference in Egypt and has moderated sessions at conferences in Cyprus, Italy, Lebanon, and the UAE.
Fluent in Arabic, English, and German, she is active in numerous professional organizations including the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, the American Analog Astronaut Community, and the German Science Center (DWZ). She is listed in the “Who is She” and “Who’s Who” databases recognizing outstanding women in science and education.
At the professional level, she worked as a water systems’ designer and wastewater system designer.
She has over 35 publications in refereed international journals and conferences and is currently the PI of the “ solar canal grant”.
