About Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing, Kenya

The Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS) is a key government agency in Kenya, established in 1977 under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, but now under the Executive Office of the President. DRSRS is renowned for its work in mapping and monitoring natural resources and environmental changes through advanced remote sensing and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technologies. The department was initially set up to address resource depletion and environmental degradation by systematically collecting, analyzing, and disseminating critical data on Kenya’s natural resources.

DRSRS specializes in a wide range of activities, such as land cover and land use mapping, vegetation surveys, wildlife census, and resource monitoring. Its area of specialization includes remote sensing and spatial data analysis, which are crucial for informed decision-making in environmental management and land use planning. By integrating satellite imagery, aerial photography, and field data, DRSRS produces detailed and accurate datasets that support various sectors, including agriculture, forestry, wildlife conservation, water resources management, and urban planning.

One of the department's key responsibilities is conducting wildlife aerial surveys, primarily in national parks and wildlife reserves, to assess populations and habitat conditions. These surveys are instrumental for conservation efforts and help shape policies for wildlife management. DRSRS also monitors land degradation, deforestation, and desertification, providing timely information to tackle environmental challenges.

In addition to data collection, DRSRS offers training, capacity building, and technical support to government agencies, researchers, and local communities. The department collaborates with national and international organizations to advance resource management and sustainable development initiatives in Kenya. Through its data and expertise, DRSRS plays an essential role in shaping Kenya’s environmental policies, supporting sustainable resource use, and promoting resilience to climate change and environmental degradation.
