Biography

Dr. Kamal Labbassi is a Professor at the Chouaib Doukkali University (www.ucd.ac.ma) since 1990, and the Head of the research unit "Geosciences & Remote Sensing". He is a holder of a doctoral dissertation in Es-Sciences (1998) from Chouaib Doukkali University, Morocco, and a PhD from the University of Pau, France (1991). He also serves as a visiting Professor at the University of Nantes (France).

Dr. Labbassi also serves as the President of the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE), Council member of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), and Ambassador, in Morocco, of IEEE-GRSS for the MENA region. He actively participated in the drafting of the Scientific Plan for the Digital Belt and Road (DBAR) program, launched by the Chinese Academy of Science in the framework of the "Silk Road" initiative in 2013. He is a member of the DBAR Working Group on Water Resources (DBAR-water WG) and director of the International Center of Excellence on Water Resources, created under the DBAR program.

He is an expert/consultant in feasibility studies and technical reports for the World Bank, African Union Commission, and the African Academy of Sciences, as well as a Peer Reviewer of the international programs AMESD (African Monitoring of the Environment for Sustainable Development) and GMES and Africa (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa), implemented under the coordination of the commission of the African Union with the support of the European Commission. Member of the WG mandated by the African Union Commission to establish the African space policy and strategy.

He initiated and led several research projects focused on remote sensing applications in geoscience and involving a large network of international partners. He has supervised several Master's and Doctoral theses. Author and co-author of numerous publications and scientific papers.
