Biography

Muongeni Manda is a final year undergraduate student with a focus on environmental conservation and Geoinformatics. Throughout her academic journey, Muongeni has been engaged in various projects related to environmental conservation. One notable project involved research collaboration with Anglo-American, Flora and Fauna International, and Nature Metrics. This project focused on utilizing eDNA to monitor biodiversity in aquatic and terrestrial areas in Shurugwi, particularly in the Unki Mine claim area.

Additionally, Muongeni contributed to a PhD project examining elephant response to different vegetation types. As part of the YouthMappers initiative at Chinhoyi University of Technology, Muongeni participated in a project aimed at mapping water sources in Chinhoyi. The goal was to improve water availability by constructing more boreholes and taps to address water scarcity issues in the area. During her internship, Muongeni conducted a project investigating factors contributing to the abundance of Chironomidae aquatic species in the river systems in Chironde, Shurugwi. She also collaborated with Dr. Kenneth Mubea from Digital Earth Africa on a project monitoring water quality in Lake Chivero, Zimbabwe, using Digital Earth Africa to ensure the protection of this vital site for future generations. Currently, as a final year student, Muongeni is undertaking a project focused on quantifying tree cover loss and forest carbon sequestration potential in a mining area. Her aim is to combat climate change by proposing mitigatory measures to reduce carbon emissions, thus promoting sustainability.
