Water infrastructure planning

Water infrastructure is needed to supply citizens, communities, businesses and industries with potable water; collect, treat and discharge wastewater and manage storm water runoff and prevent flooding. The effects of climate change is shown as cities and countries across the world are experiencing increasingly more frequent and severe occurrences of extreme weather conditions that have caused ocean, lake and river levels to increase, occasioned severe storms, floods and acute droughts, all of which threaten water sources and overtax and make water infrastructure more vulnerable.

Effective and resilient water infrastructure planning is critical to public and environmental health, and to economic sectors worldwide, from pharmaceutical to agricultural to service industries. Disruptions in or loss of water or wastewater services, decline in water quantity and quality brought about by inadequate systems or major water disasters caused by floods and pollution, as a result of under investment in water infrastructure management, pose risks to public health, economies and the environment (WSP n.d.)
