Biography

Paul Grogan is an associate professor with the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. He holds a B.S. degree in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Wisconsin and a S.M. degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics and Ph.D. in Engineering Systems from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to joining ASU he was a faculty member at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Grogan leads the Collective Design Lab which studies the use of information-based methods and tools for engineering design in systems with distributed architectures such as aerospace, defense, and critical infrastructure. He works closely with NASA's Earth Science Division to conceive and evaluate distributed spacecraft missions to improve Earth observations of convective storms, snow, and the planetary boundary layer. He serves as lead developer for several open-source modeling and simulation projects including SpaceNet discrete event simulation for space exploration campaign logistics, the Tradespace Analysis Tool for Constellations (TAT-C), and the New Observing Strategies Testbed (NOS-T). He currently serves as chair of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) Technical Committee, vice-chair of the Council of Engineering Systems Universities (CESUN) executive committee, and chair-elect of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Space Logistics Technical Committee.
