About Southern African Research and Documentation Centre
SARDC is an independent regional knowledge resource centre that seek to enhance the effectiveness of key developmental processes in the region Southern African Development Community (SADC) region through the collection, analysis, production and dissemination of information and enabling the capacity to generate and use knowledge.
SARDC was established in 1985 to strengthen regional policy perspectives and track implementation on a range of issues in southern Africa, and works in partnership at national and regional levels. SARDC is made up of topical institutes that focus on relevant regional processes, and has a long track record of achievements, in partnership with the SADC and others.
The main focus areas pursued under separate institutes are water resources management, climate resilience, natural disasters, food security, natural resources, gender issues, regional economic integration, infrastructure, industrialization, tourism, energy, democracy and governance. The Institute responsible for water, environment, climate change, natural disasters and agriculture issues is known as I.
Musokotwane Environment Resource Centre for Southern Africa (IMERCSA) IMERCSA is the regional collaborating centre for southern Africa for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNEP GRID Arendal, contributing to all editions of the Africa Environment Outlook (AEO) and the Global Environment Outlook (GEO).
SARDC IMERCSA has produced many publications over the past 20 years, including in addition to the Southern Africa Environment Outlook:
- Mainstreaming Gender in Transboundary Water Resources Management,
- Limpopo River Basin Atlas, Changes, Opportunities, and Challenges,
- Atlas of the Changing Environment in the Zambezi River Basin; and
- Responding to Climate Change Impacts: Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies as Practiced in the Zambezi River Basin which highlight the state of the environment, impact of climate change on people and the environment, adaptation strategies, and future prospects and scenarios;
