The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, LIST covers with its 630 employees the domains of materials, environment and IT. As an RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) and with its interdisciplinary impact-driven approach, LIST contributes to the development of Luxembourg’s economy and society. LIST's Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) research department comprises more than 180 life, environmental and IT scientists and engineers across four research units. These units bring together the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, including climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. Its research unit ‘Remote Sensing and natural resources modelling’ group has centred its activities on the combination and exploitation of remote sensing information obtained by multiple and complementary sensors installed on spaceborne and airborne platforms, together with in-situ monitoring, to produce information on the status of natural resources ranging from local or regional to global scales, with unprecedented accuracy and spatio-temporal resolution. These studies are, for example, targeting the development of new approaches for systematic flooding and evapotranspiration observations, the retrieval of soil moisture from active microwave remote sensing data, the integration of such data into both hydrologic and hydraulic models via data assimilation approaches and the development of innovative spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-based vessel monitoring and route prediction methods in the domain of Maritime Surveillance.
